I ruined all my tips. I can’t go longer than 5 minutes before the tips go fully black and not accepting any new solder. I ended up giving up
i bought all the stuff yesterday from your site (except the sadly non available flux, i will have to make due for now), let’s hope i am not disappointed in the “bad equipment” compartment 😉
Tinning a badly oxidized tip can be more challenging than just wiping it in a ball of brass and applying solder.
I recently conditioned a tip like this:
1. Working with the tip completely cold, I used a file to reshape it and go to the bare metal through the oxidation, and some sand paper (up to 320 grit is fine).
2. Immediately after getting it reshaped and resurfaced, I dipped it in rosin flux to seal it against oxidation and let the alcohol evaporate.
3. Then I turned on the iron, and as soon as it reached temperature, I tinned it. Thanks to the flux keeping oxygen away and etching at the metal, the tip took solder very well.
